While I'm not a certified psychologist, I did use to work at Subway (which is basically the same thing, right?).  That year of cutting vegetables, restocking potato chip bags, and making men sandwiches actually taught me a lot of valuable lessons.  All in all, what I'm trying to say is that I can tell exactly what kind of person you are based on what you order at Subway.  So instead of paying some therapist a thousand dollars to tell you what's wrong with you, let me take care of that job right now:

1. You order the vegetarian sub.  You are a better person than I will ever be.
2. You pronounce Italian "eye-talian."  You are probably going through some type of identity crisis because you are trying to be someone you're not by faking a southern accent. 
3. You order double meat.  You are a disgusting human being and will probably die of a heart attack sometime in the next couple of months.  So the next time you're about to order that double meat ham sandwich, just think about how much pig butt you're about to consume.  I know it's hard to break old habits, but I believe in you.  You can do it.  Take the time to reevaluate your life because you honestly don't need that much pig butt going into your mouth at one time.  Trust me.
4. You think that it's a good idea to put both sweet onion and chipotle sauce on your sandwich.  If this is you, your outfits probably never match because I'm willing to bet that you're as bad at picking out your clothing as you are at picking out sandwich sauces that compliment one another.  Aka sweet onion and chipotle do not go together and neither do your plaid shorts and striped shirt.  I know I just rocked your world, but it will all be okay.  I promise.
5. You microwave your sandwich.  I'm actually going to break my rule and suggest that you go see a therapist because you have deep-rooted psychological issues that I can't even begin to scratch the surface of.
6. You order the Big Philly Cheesesteak.  You didn't get that much attention as a child and you try to make up for it by ordering the biggest sandwich on the menu.  You're trying to appear super macho and manly in hopes that either the beautiful sandwich artist (aka me) or the woman in line behind you will fall instantly in love.  You are also perfectly okay with paying $10 for a Subway sandwich that will ultimately only leave you feeling more alone than ever before.
7. You toast your sandwich with the veggies on it.  Your mother was a terrible cook and your taste buds have learned to love disgusting things like warm lettuce and burnt pickles.  
8. You order flat bread.  You're trying really hard to be hipster, and your ultimate life goal is start your own line of home workout videos.
9. You ask your sandwich artist to scoop out the middle of your bread before making your sandwich.  You collect yoga mats and have a lot of trust issues. 
10. You ask your sandwich artist to change gloves before making your sub even though it's right in the middle of a super long and stressful lunch rush.  You only care about yourself and are probably a politician because only a politician would ask you to do something as ridiculous as change your gloves.
11. You order the meatball sub.  You're going through a dark time in your life.  You're very lost and alone, and you forgot that only weirdos order this particular sandwich.  But it doesn't stop there: you are even weirder if you get the meatball sub and then put lettuce and pickles and cucumbers and stuff like that on it.  Bonus points if you also decide to garnish this sub with honey mustard.   
12. You order a turkey sub with lettuce, tomatoes, and mayo.  You are an unoriginal white girl who cringes at the thought of change and/or saturated fats.
13. You order the Spicy Italian sub.  You are trying to give off the impression that you are a fun, flirtatious, outgoing person because you ordered a "spicy" sandwich.  But when it comes down to it, you're just going to finish your sub, go home, and go right back to playing Farmville or online checkers while constantly refreshing your Twitter interactions page hoping that someone will notice you.
14. You order the Seafood Sensation sandwich.  You spend your time reading fan-fiction and listening to Youtube song covers.  You hope to one day live on the coast of Maine and own a fishing boat.  You constantly settle for second best, which is why you're okay with eating a sandwich full of fake, rubbery crab.
15. You come into Subway on a daily basis.  You are very lonely, and the only people who know your name are your mom and the Subway employees that you see every day.
16. You buy all of the cookies, leaving none for everyone else.  You're very conceited and selfish which is why you haven't been able to stay in a serious relationship for longer than a couple hours.  
17. You call your local Subway, give them your order over the phone, and say "I'll be there in five minutes to pick it up."  You assume that the world revolves around you when *spoiler alert* everyone actually hates you.
18. You order white bread.  You are a raging racist.
19. You come into the store five minutes before closing time and order seventeen footlongs.  You will never find love.
20. You don't put any sauce on your sandwich.  The word moist makes you very uncomfortable.

It's as simple as that.

I fall in love with small things: the way someone's eyes crinkle when they laugh, the way that Paige sticks her tongue out of the corner of her mouth when she's really concentrating on something, the light that shines from someone's face when they're bearing their testimony.  I think small things like that matter.  I think they're important because they make each and every one of us unique and special.  So whenever you feel small and insignificant, just remember that you have a role to play that no one else can fulfill.  You are the only person who can truly be you.  Remember that you're going to live a life that is uniquely yours.  Remember that you're going to influence people that no one else can and you're going to make changes that no one else will.  Remember that you matter because you're you.  Don't let anyone make you believe otherwise.  Love yourself, and be proud of the small things that make you who you are.



So here's a list of 99 little things that make me who I am.  And hopefully after reading this you'll feel like you know me a little bit better than you did before.  :)

1. If I could be anywhere in the world right now it would be with my family.  Wherever they are is good enough for me.
2. I can curl my hair in less than ten minutes.  Yeah, I don't know why I haven't been interviewed by Oprah yet either. 
3. I wear a ring on the middle finger of my right hand.  It's a small silver friendship ring.  Amy Castro, my other half, has the other one.
4. "I Want to Hold Your Hand" is my favorite Beatles song. 
5. I don't like Arby's.
6. "Thoroughly Modern Millie" was my favorite show that I did in high school.  I played Miss Dorothy.  It was an amazing show.
7. I recently made a goal to never again miss a day of scripture study.  So far, so good!
8. I really like wave pools.  And lazy rivers.
9. Airports stress me out more than anything else in this entire world.  I've literally never been more scared to do anything than I was to fly back and forth to Brazil all by myself.  But I did it!  Yay me.
10. I used to bite my nails.  But I stopped that yucky habit.
11. I usually don't go to bed until 1 or 2 in the morning.  I'm basically a party animal.
12. Having to buy presents for people stresses me out.  I'm always scared they're not going to like it and think it's stupid or whatever.  
13. I've never seen Boy Meets World. 
14. I'm very aware of people's eyebrows.  I know that sounds weird, but it's one of the first things I notice about people.  That and their smile.
15. I love coloring.  If you give me a new box of crayons and a coloring book I will literally be the happiest girl ever.
16. I hate feet.
17. My mom is my best friend. 
18. I was named after my grandma.  
19. My biggest fear is not getting married.  It sounds superficial, but it's actually something that I think about a lot.
20. Arthur was my favorite show growing up.  Having fun isn't hard when you've got a library card.

24. I had kidney surgery when I was two.  I still have the scars on my left hip...battle scars.
25. Sensual Amber is my favorite Bath and Body Works scent.  Mmmmmm sensual.
26. Elephants are my favorite animal.  If you send me a picture of an elephant I will be your best friend forever.
27. I broke my arm when I was little by falling out of bed.  Hardcore parkour.
28. "The Phantom of the Opera" is my favorite musical.  
29. D&C 121:7-8 is my favorite scripture. 
30. I own a pair of floral print jeans.
31. I've gone to Asian Buffet so many times that the owners know me by name.

35. I can pogo stick like a boss.  Except one time I fell off and got a really large and colorful bruise on my butt, but that's besides the point.

Outside of my mom and dad, Mr. Schembri is the person that has influenced me the most.  He was my high school calculus teacher and is the reason that I'm a math education major today.  You should go read my blog post called "I'm going to make a difference: I'm going to teach math" to find out all about it.

92. I used to be scared to sleep with my hand hanging over the side of my bed.  Because of that creepy story where this guy licks this girls hand at night.
93. Going through a car wash is one of my absolute favorite things to do.  In a car, of course.  I don't go casually running through car washes.  That's ridiculous.  But I love the sounds and how it's all dark and stuff.  Car washes are so fun.

I used to be one of those high school kids that muttered, “When am I ever going to use this in the real world?” under my breath during every math class.  I highly doubted that being able to factor a polynomial or find the determinant of a matrix would improve the quality of my future life in any way, shape, or form.  My attitude was no different when I walked into AP Calculus on the first day of my senior year.  I sat down at my desk assuming that I would at most tolerate the subject, just like I had with every other math class.  My teacher, Mr. Schembri, introduced himself and immediately dove into the subject material as the other students and I grudgingly took out our notebooks.  Calculus started out as just another class, but as the school year went on, I realized that it had surprisingly become my favorite subject.  For the first time in my life I enjoyed doing my math homework.  It was actually pretty weird.  What kind of loser looks forward to taking math tests and working on calculus problems?  Me.  At first I didn't understand how I underwent such a dramatic and seemingly impossible change.  I hated math before.  What had made calculus so different?

The answer was simple: my teacher.  He encouraged me to be open-minded and receptive to mathematics.  The power and passion with which he taught inspired me to love learning.  He was so excited to teach his students about math, that it made us excited to learn.  I had so much gratitude and respect for him, and I suddenly knew that I wanted to motivate other students the way he had motivated me.  Though I knew I wanted to teach math, I was scared.  I spent my entire life thinking I was going into the medical field, and now I had done a 180 and completely switched majors.  And it's not like I switched to something nice and easy like floral design or whatever.  Math is a hard and scary major, and at first I didn’t know if I was making the right choice.  But here I am today, taking multi-variable calculus and differential equations, with three other college math classes already under my belt.  And I love it.  I know that math is what I'm supposed to do, and I can't wait to be a teacher.  I'm so excited to help and inspire my future students to grow and learn in ways that they won't think is possible.  I'm going to show them how to love both math and learning.  I'm going to make a difference: I'm going to teach math.

I'm a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints:  I am a Mormon.  I've been a member of this church for my entire life, and it has in every way helped me become the person that I am today.

I'm so grateful for everything that my church has taught me and for the knowledge that it has given me.  I know without a shadow of doubt that The Book of Mormon is the word of God.  I've read and prayed about the words in The Book of Mormon countless times, and I know that they are true.  I know that God the Father and Jesus Christ appeared to Joseph Smith in the Sacred Grove, and that through Joseph the gospel was restored once more on this earth.  I know that families can be together forever.  I know that I am a child of God.  I know that Jesus Christ came to this earth to pay the price for all of our sins.  It is through Him that we are able to live with our Father in Heaven once more.  He made it possible for us to overcome all of our shortcomings.  I know that He knows me personally and that He is my Savior.  I know that Thomas S. Monson is the living prophet on the earth today.  I know that this church is true.



As I'm sure a lot of you have heard, I'm preparing to serve an eighteen month mission for my church.  I've been planning on serving a mission for some time now, but I thought that I was going to have to wait a couple of years until I actually got to go (before October 2012, boys had to be 19 to serve a mission and girls had to be 21).  But on October 6, 2012 the prophet Thomas S. Monson made an announcement that changed the course of my life: young men could now serve missions at 18 and young women could serve at 19.  When I heard the announcement I burst into tears.  Suddenly the opportunity for me to serve a mission was right around the corner!  My heart was full of joy and I knew that serving a mission was what I was supposed to do.

I know a lot of you guys aren't Mormon, so I just wanted to take some time to explain exactly what a mission for my church is.  :)

While all worthy, young Mormon men are expected to serve a mission, it's an optional choice for young women.  But for the first time in the history of the church, the tides are turning: more and more sisters are preparing to serve missions.  I find it truly amazing how many young women are willing to put their lives on hold to serve the Lord.

A mission is two years long for a young man and eighteen months long for a young woman.  After completing the required paperwork, including doctors and dentist appointments and interviews with church leaders, the missionary will receive a letter from the headquarters of the Church.  That letter will tell the missionary where in the world they will be serving, what language they will be speaking, and what date their mission starts.  Missionaries can serve all over the world.  My dad served in Guatemala, and one of my best friends has been called to serve in Korea!  Finding out where you're going to serve is so exciting, and I can't wait until I receive my call in a couple of weeks.

Before the missionary actually goes to their assigned area, they report to a Missionary Training Center (MTC).  They stay there for anywhere between a couple of weeks to a little longer than a month.  In the MTC, the missionary prepares to go out and teach the gospel: they learn their assigned language, practice teaching, and master doctrines.  After their time in the MTC is over, the missionary then reports to their area to begin their mission.

Missionaries follow a strict schedule in the mission field.  They wake up at 6:30 every day and spend two hours studying and pondering the scriptures.  They then go out and try to find people to teach!  They oftentimes will go knocking door to door, asking people if they would like to learn more about our religion.  Missionaries devote their entire lives to serving the Lord.  When I'm on my mission, I won't spend time listening to music, watching TV, or texting.  In fact, I won't even have my phone on my mission!  I'll be able to keep in touch with everyone through letters or emails though, so don't worry!  In fact, the only times I'll get to even call home are on Mother's Day and Christmas.  Every waking moment I have will be spent helping and teaching other people.  It's a sacrifice, and it's not going to be easy, but I know that serving a mission is going to change my life.  While lots of people might think that I'm throwing away eighteen months of my life, I don't see it that way at all.  I know that it's going to be worth it because not only will I be helping other people, but I will become a better person.  My mission is going to teach me how to serve and love others and how to see people the way that God sees them.

I can't wait to serve my mission because I know that it's going to be one of the most remarkable things I will do in my entire life.  I'm so grateful for the opportunity I have to serve, and I know that I will never regret it.  I'm counting down the days until I can go out and bring the world His truth.  

I’m a little sad that I didn't get to spend this Mother’s Day with my mom.  Now that I've moved away from home and am living on my own, I've grown to appreciate her so much more than I have in the past.  I've always loved my mom, but until this year, I never really understood how much of a blessing she was in my life.  When I come home to my apartment after school or work, she’s not there to joke around with me or to make brownies and watch America’s Next Top Model with me until the sun comes up.  She's not here to tell me that I’m going to regret buying those ugly black boots in a month or to encourage me to audition for the school’s musical.  She's not here to be my stage mom anymore.  And I miss all of those things.  My mom is my best friend and one of the most important person in my life.  Without her I wouldn’t be half the person that I am today.  She’s taught me how to be strong and brave when life throws curve balls at you.  She cried with me when I didn't make Cinderella, but she helped me get back up and try again.  She's been my biggest cheerleader and has supported me in everything that I've done.  My mom has taught me how to serve others without expecting anything in return.  She's showed me how to be strong in the gospel and how to endure to the end.  She's taught me how to love the scriptures, and she's taught me how to rely on the Lord.  I'm so grateful for the wonderful example that she's been in my life.  I miss her every single day, and I hope to one day become half of the woman that she is.  


Nothing is impossible.  I need to remember this.  When I think about my future and about the opportunity that I have to one day become a mother, I often feel unworthy and inadequate.  I don't think that I'm strong enough or righteous enough to be a good mother.  But no matter how small or insignificant we feel, we need to remember that God has trusted us with his most sacred work.  He has foreordained us to be mothers.  He knows that we can do it.  We just need to learn to see ourselves the way that our Father in Heaven sees us.  We need to trust in Him.  We need to trust that He knows us.  We need to trust that if we pray and ask in faith, He will help us become the best mothers that we can be.  He sees our divine potential, and He yearns to help us achieve all that He created us to achieve.  We need to believe that we can do it. 

I am entering the time in my life where I will soon start my own eternal family.  I am preparing now to build a righteous home, and I'm preparing now to become the best mother that I can possibly be.  And I'm remembering to call upon God to help me.  He will not leave me alone.  With Him, nothing is impossible.

I love Star Wars.  I grew up with a brother, Cameron, who was obsessed with it, so naturally we spent a lot of our Saturdays watching back-to-back Star Wars movies.  When I was younger, my favorite one was "Attack of the Clones."  Yes, it's embarrassing, but true.  As a young girl I just swooned over the cheesy Anakin and Padme loves scenes.  And over Padme's dresses of course.



Look at how cute and happy this very-big-age-difference couple is (oh wait, I just looked it up and I guess they were only apart by 5 years which isn't bad.  I thought it was like ten but never mind...).  How could you not fall in love with them?  I've therefore concluded that whoever comes up to me and says that they did not enjoy this forbidden romance is a liar.

So today is Star Wars Day, and I thought that I would celebrate by listing off some of my favorite things about Star Wars.

1.  Yoda.  This little guy is probably my favorite character.  He's so cute and wise and quotable: "Do or do not.  There is no try."  And he's as jumpy as a cheerleader when he's fighting which is very entertaining.  My brothers and I used to watch this scene over and over again because we thought it was so funny.  Basically Yoda takes care of business in style.


3.  Chewbacca.  He's like a giant, loyal dog that walks on two legs.  Man's best friend Star Wars style = Chewbacca.


4.  The opening credits.  There is nothing more exciting than watching the beginning of a Star Wars movie.


5.  R2-D2 and C3PO.  Star Wars would not be the same without these two.  They're the definition of a bromance.  


6.  When Luke kisses Leia.  Spoiler alert Luke and Leia are siblings.  Which makes this scene about ten times more awkward.  But hey, you gotta do what you gotta do.


 7.  The bad guys.  I think we can all safely agree that Star Wars has some of the best villains in cinematic history:  Darth Vader, The Emperor, Darth Maul, etc.  No one does bad guys like Star Wars does bad guys. 



8.  The spaceships.  The spaceships in Star Wars are so cool and I want one.


9.  Obi Wan Kenobi.  He's kind of a big deal.  And he's also hot.  So double points for him.  You go, Glen Coco.

I tend to get caught up in all of the stress and worry that life brings.  It's hard not to, especially when I've been thrown into the "real world" with taxes and a job and adult responsibilities.  But as I've gotten older and wiser, I've realized that my outlook on life has a profound impact on my general happiness.  When I'm being a pessimist and only focusing on the negative things that are happening to me- the trials, the struggles, and the burdens- I get easily discouraged, moody, and selfish.  But when I turn around and consciously try to remember all of the wonderful people and blessings in my life, I feel a million times better: I have more energy, I'm happier, I work harder in school and at my job, and I'm more willing to serve those around me.

One of the most important lessons that I've recently learned is that it's up to us to make the most out of each and every day.  We need to realize that, as humans, we're strong enough to handle whatever curve ball life throws at us, just as long as we've nurtured and developed a healthy, positive outlook on life.  So I think that it's important that we take time out of our busy schedules to develop an attitude of gratitude.  We need to slow down and remember all of the things that we've already been given before we go racing around asking for more.  If we're patient with ourselves, we'll soon realize that we have more than we could ever wish for and more than any of us will ever deserve.

So I've taken a piece of my own advice and came up with a list of 101 things that I couldn't live without.  It's not a super serious or thought-provoking list.  It's just a bunch of small things that I'm grateful for.  Things that I normally don't think about and things that I take for granted.  Things that make me happy, things that make me smile, and things that make me grateful for the life that I've been given.
